We train to strengthen, purify and improve the human spirit, through practicing the way of the Japanese sword.

Following the way of modern Bushido we strive to embody the seven virtues of the Samurai.

At the same time we work hard to eliminate the four sicknesses of the Samurai, namely fear, doubt, surprise and captivation.

We are committed to keeping traditional Japanese Swordsmanship alive through the embodiment of Kenjutsu. As the ancient masters taught, an art can only come alive in those that dilligently practice it and breathes life into it. Initally the student practices the art, eventually the kenshi becomes the art. This is what we strive for.

What you don’t sweat when you are young, will return as tears when you are old – Old samurai saying

We live with a samurai bushido mindset, taking this art very seriously, never forgetting where and why it originated. The bugeisha (martial artist) can never loose zanshin (focus) for then he/she falls victim to one or more of the four sicknesses. What we learn here spills over into our ordinary day to day lives, improving those lives infinitely by the applications of the principles and the sharpness of the mind that we obtain as a result of practicing our art.

It will improve your mental strength, endurance, reflexes, posture, health, general outlook on life, relationship with your friends, significant other and work/ school colleagues. And to boot, what is cooler than reliving the ancient tradition of the Samurai.

The moon and water teaching teaches us, that the moon is best reflected on a totally still water surface, such is the no mind or mushin seishin we strive to attain.

Our style of Swordsmanship is heavily based on the Toyama Ryu/ Nakamura Ryu Style of military swordsmanship. As such we formally incorporate all forms/kata from these systems into our practice and curriculum.

“The modern martial art of aikido logically applies rounded, circular movements in all aspects of its technique, from throwing to receiving a foe’s attack. For the sword techniques of the Nakamura ryu too, an effective circular motion making use of correct blade angle and cutting trajectory is a defining characteristic. Another unique feature of the discipline is the logical nature of how the blade is stopped or realigned after making a cut, utilising the momentum of the blade to flow into an attack against the next enemy. Furthermore, in the Nakamura ryu we train not only in solo kata against the air but also practice tameshigiri against straw, bamboo and other simulated targets, aiming to polish technique so as to avoid errors in the cutting angle. We also aim to unify the student’s heart and mind with his ki and all his physical and mental powers, and to foster and nourish the spiritual aspects of his training.”

From a principles perspective we are also heavily influenced by the sword philosophy of the famed Samurai and sword saint Yagyu Munenori, who is the founder of the Edo branch of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu.

We also incorporate techniques from the derivative Tenshinryu hyouho system of battojutsu.
